What is Remotasks?
Remotasks is a Scale AI-owned platform that pays you to label data for AI training — drawing bounding boxes on images, annotating video frames, evaluating AI responses, and tagging audio. Work is available remotely to South Africans. Pay is in USD and comes weekly. The catch is that you must pass unpaid training exams before unlocking tasks, and task availability fluctuates depending on what Scale AI's clients need that week.
How It Works
Sign up at remotasks.com and complete the free training courses on Remotasks University. Each task type (image annotation, text labeling, AI response evaluation, etc.) has its own qualification exam you must pass before tasks become visible. Once qualified, log in and pick up available tasks from your dashboard. Pay per task varies from a few cents for simple labels to several dollars for complex annotations. Payments are processed every Wednesday for work done the previous week, and land in your PayPal or Payoneer account within 24-48 hours. The $5 minimum payout is about R90-95 at current rates.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- ✓ Payoneer support means SA users can get paid without needing PayPal
- ✓ Weekly payouts are faster than most survey or gig platforms
- ✓ No experience needed — training is free and self-paced
- ✓ USD earnings hedge against rand depreciation
- ✓ LiDAR and advanced annotation tasks can pay significantly more once qualified
Cons
- ✗ Training modules are unpaid — can take several hours before you earn anything
- ✗ Task availability is inconsistent; some weeks there's almost nothing
- ✗ Basic annotation work pays $2-5/hour — low by SA professional standards
- ✗ Load-shedding and slow internet make real-time task sessions frustrating
- ✗ Scale AI occasionally removes task types without notice, cutting off income streams
