How This Scam Works
Facebook ads or WhatsApp messages offer 'guaranteed' personal loans of R5,000-R100,000 with no credit check. When you apply, you're told you're approved but must pay an 'insurance fee,' 'processing fee,' or 'deposit' of R200-R2,000 before the loan can be disbursed. After paying, you never receive the loan. The scammers use names of real financial institutions or invent official-sounding company names.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Guaranteed loan approval regardless of credit history
- Required to pay fees BEFORE receiving the loan
- Communication only via WhatsApp or Facebook (no office address)
- No NCR (National Credit Regulator) registration number
- Pressure to pay quickly ('offer expires today')

What to Do If You've Been Targeted
- 1 Never pay upfront fees for a loan — legitimate lenders deduct fees from the loan amount
- 2 Check if the lender is NCR-registered at ncr.org.za
- 3 Report to NCR at ncr.org.za/complaints
- 4 Report to SAFPS at safps.org.za
- 5 Report the Facebook ad or WhatsApp number
