Crypto Mining Investment Schemes

Crypto Scam Active Threat

Also known as: Bitcoin Mining SA, Cloud Mining SA, Crypto Investment Club SA

Reported losses: R500-R200,000+ per victim. University students are primary targets.

Last updated: 2026-04-01

How This Scam Works

You're invited to invest R500-R50,000 in a 'crypto mining pool' or 'Bitcoin investment club.' Promoters show screenshots of massive returns and recruit via WhatsApp groups, TikTok, and campus events. Early investors receive payouts (funded by new investors — classic Ponzi structure). Once recruitment slows, the scheme collapses and organisers disappear with the funds.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Guaranteed returns from crypto (no investment is guaranteed)
  • Recruitment-based structure (earn more by recruiting others)
  • Returns funded by new investor deposits, not actual mining
  • No verifiable mining operation or blockchain proof
  • Organisers only contactable via WhatsApp or social media

Evidence

  • FSCA has shut down multiple SA-based crypto Ponzi schemes since 2023
  • Mirror Trading International (MTI) — SA's largest crypto scam — collapsed in 2020 with $588M in losses
  • Multiple university campuses have reported similar recruitment-based schemes

What to Do If You've Been Targeted

  1. 1 Never invest in anything that guarantees crypto returns
  2. 2 Check FSCA warnings at fsca.co.za before investing
  3. 3 Report to FSCA at fsca.co.za/Enforcement
  4. 4 Report to SAPS if you've lost money
  5. 5 Warn others in your WhatsApp group or campus community
