How This Scam Works
You receive a WhatsApp message from an unknown number offering 'easy online work' paying R500-R2,000/day. The tasks start simple (liking YouTube videos, rating apps, writing reviews). You complete a few tasks and receive a small payment (R50-R200) to build trust. Then you're told to 'pre-pay' or 'invest' to unlock higher-paying tasks. The amounts escalate. Eventually the scammers disappear with your money.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Unsolicited WhatsApp/Telegram message from unknown number
- Initial small payout to build trust (classic advance-fee pattern)
- Tasks involve liking/rating content (violates platform ToS)
- Asked to 'invest' or 'pre-pay' to access better tasks
- Promises of R500+/day for simple tasks

What to Do If You've Been Targeted
- 1 Block the WhatsApp number immediately
- 2 Never pay to access 'jobs' or 'tasks'
- 3 Report the number to WhatsApp (Settings → Help → Contact Us)
- 4 Report to SAPS online at saps.gov.za
- 5 Warn friends and family — these scams spread via referrals
